Teachers Isabel Ferreira and Thaiza Barros have released the book “Mia, Myself, and the Puff.” This children’s story follows the journey of curious Mia and her imaginary friend, the Puff, through various settings around the world, including the Amazon, Bolivia, Japan, Uganda, and Iceland. The book blends cultural diversity, empathy, and a love for reading, highlighting the importance of representation and respect for differences. In addition to addressing themes like inclusion and the environment in an accessible way, the bilingual edition broadens children’s cultural and linguistic horizons by bringing them closer to the English language. The launch event was attended by the Beacon Community and featured a special storytelling session led by Ms. Mello.
The book aligns with an important trend in children’s literature, encouraging cultural diversity and empathy as tools to help children become more inclusive and aware. By exploring different cultures and environments around the world, the story emphasizes the value of representation and respect, helping to break down stereotypes and expand perspectives. More than just an adventure, the narrative also plays an educational role, touching on inclusion, human rights, and environmental care. The bilingual edition further enriches this experience, allowing children to engage with English in a natural and engaging way.
“We believe that children’s literature can open young eyes to the richness of the diversity around us. Through the adventures of Mia and the Puff, we want to show that the world is vast, full of stories, cultures, and experiences that connect and transform us.” – Isabel Ferreira and Thaiza Barros.
