Towards the end of the semester, students from the 5th grade (Y5) have started the Unit of Inquiry “Making Memories”. As a central idea, they seek to understand how human beings can use different ways of passing on knowledge, culture and history for future generations.
The lines of investigation that guide the project are related to the cultural heritage of humankind, the different types of media for passing on knowledge, and the importance of oral language for preserving memory. In addition to the transdisciplinary work that occurs in every area of knowledge regarding this theme, the History classes had an important role in this investigation. This year, Beacon is celebrating its first 10 years, and the students were invited to revive details of its memory.
As a starting point, they used digital media to produce records of the discoveries. They listed staff members and students who have been at the school since its opening and prepared a questionnaire for interviews. The students also searched for pictures and enjoyed remembering when they were part of the school’s Early Childhood Education.
The final purpose of this project is to create the “Beacon Museum”. There will be permanent and temporary exhibitions that the students will be in charge of and will nourish aiming at creating a memory center.
