“The current moment in Ukraine” is agenda of lecture

The ongoing and prolonged conflict that began in February 2014, mainly involving Russia, pro-Russian forces and Ukraine, has been on the agenda worldwide. Tensions between Russia and Ukraine exploded, especially from 2021 to 2022, when it became clear that Russia was considering launching a military invasion of Ukraine. 

In February 2022, the crisis deepened and diplomatic negotiations to subdue Russia failed; this escalated when the country moved forces into the separatist-controlled regions. Since then, we have been following the events in all media outlets and how this conflict has impacted the entire world.

In view of this scenario and the repercussion it represents socially, Beacon invited professor and political scientist Christian Lohbauer to give a lecture to the students of the Middle School and High School. Lohbauer holds a Master’s and Doctorate in Political Science from the University of São Paulo (USP). 

With the theme “The current moment in Ukraine”, the professor reported on the historical context related to the conflicts involving the Ukraine region. The students and the lecturer had a healthy chat about the situation and clarified their doubts about this conflict. It was a productive exchange in which the students were able to demonstrate and reinforce the attributes of investigation and reflection, characteristic of the IB student profile.

According to Enio Vieira, a history teacher at Beacon, the questions and observations of each class varied according to what they had been learning in class previously. The teacher considered interesting the use of maps during the lecture and commented on the importance of dialogues like this one, in which specialists help to deepen relevant subjects for the students and teaching staff. 

From the students’ point of view, the lecture offered the opportunity to delve deeper into a topic in international evidence from an expert’s point of view.
