“Roda de Matemática” Live and Open Class for parents and students

The founding partners of the “Roda de Matemática” project, Ligia Zorzo and Janaina Villela, presented to parents how the program is developed with students and what are the fundamentals with a pedagogical approach.

The program started by aiming at presenting creative, flexible and meaningful Math for children, besides enabling learning in a relaxed and fluid way. After all, the “science of numbers” is a great tool that helps us learn how to solve problems and face challenges, both in the school universe and in life.

By approaching the theme of the classes, Janaina said that she considers “Roda de Matemática” as complementary to the school curriculum and it focuses on going beyond Mathematics itself. The program does not only include calculating skills, but also knowing how to think mathematically. The classes are independent of each other, and usually two investigative activities are worked out in different ways, in order to instigate students.

The activities presented during classes have different solutions or different ways to find the result, so that students need to share their reasoning with each other, promoting a greater exchange among them. “But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have the opportunity to think for themselves. After the teacher presents the challenge, each one has time to think. And it is from this point that a key detail arises for this environment to be safe: there is no predefined time to solve the equation”, she concludes.

When asked about distance learning, they said that, at the beginning, they were afraid of not having contact with students and, thus, not being able to develop the proximity and support that they applied in on-site classes. However, both emphasized that there was no such loss online and that, in fact, they managed to further strengthen the emotional bond with each student, since now everyone can show a little of their life outside the school environment.

The students also had the opportunity to participate in an open class of the “Roda de Matemática”, as a test to immerse in this universe.
