Career Day was a special day, without regular classes, where 9th grade and the 1st year of high school (Y9 and Y10) participated in lectures on professional trajectories.
Professionals and specialists from different areas, as well as alumni from IB-seal schools, were invited to share experiences and knowledge about their careers and work with the students.
The first three lectures had the participation of family members and were broadcast online (students participated in the classroom via video call). The first lecture had the participation of psychologist and pedagogue, as well as career advisor, Tiago Tamborini, a specialist in adolescent’s and children’s behavior. The second lecture had recent graduates of the IB’s Diploma Program (DP) who talked about the program and its importance throughout the graduation. The last lecture had the participation of professionals who graduated from the IB, graduated in Higher Education, also inserted into the business market.
After the remote lectures, the students had the opportunity to choose the following ones, which were divided into 4 tracks, as follows:
Track I: Business, Law, Marketing
Track II: Arts, Languages, Literature, Communication
Track III: Economics, Engineering, IT, Finances
Track IV: Medicine, Biology, Forensics, Physics
Each track consisted of four different lectures, in which students could choose the ones they wanted to attend. For example, if a student is aspiring to the arts, he/ she could attend the four lectures from Track II, while a more indecisive student had the chance to attend one from each track.
Career Day was a day filled with exchanges, dialogue, and reflection. A moment in which students were able to express the fear for the future, the anxiety regarding the enormous freedom of choice, and the opportunity of clarifying their doubts about the job market.
All the speakers demonstrated that, the choice, as important as it sounds, it is not definitive, and also that there is no right time to make that decision. In addition, they also emphasized that there is always great interchangeability between areas.
The labor market has been changing, becoming more expansive and less isolated/ specialized. “An actor is not just an actor, he also participates in audiovisual decisions, script production, photography, and other alike areas”, exemplified one of the speakers.
