Beacon welcomed members of the Guarani people and took several actions to celebrate the visit. The initiative is also part of the accreditation phase to integrate the PEA-UNESCO (“Programa de Escolas Associadas da UNESCO”).
Throughout this year, 3rd graders (Y3) from Elementary School studied Indigenous Languages, a theme related to some Units of Inquiry. During International Day, two classrooms were prepared to host an exhibition with works related to the indigenous peoples.
Aiming at raising funds to pay for the transportation of members of the Guarani people, who came from Santa Catarina, 3rd graders held the traditional “Bake Sale”. The students brought sweets and other delicacies from home and sold them to students, teachers and staff members.
The arrival of the indigenous tribe representatives was possible through actions and donations of the whole school. The children from the Guarani tribe presented a choir for students and staff members in the Campus auditorium, and also brought indigenous objects for sale.
Furthermore, we counted on the presence of professor Arthur Iraçu Fuscaldo, who holds a master’s degree in Ethnomusicology from UNESP. He is a coordinator and professor of the graduation course “African-Brazilian and Indigenous Stories and Cultures in Education”. During the pedagogical meeting, Beacon’s faculty team listened to Iraçu discuss about the indigenous theme and its different languages such as the music, arts, and dances in different tribes. He also talked about the rites of passage that represent the growth and life of the entire indigenous population.
