The 5th grade classes (Y5) presented the Primary Years Program’s (PYP) Exhibition conclusion work. The event consolidates the knowledge acquired through research. It is a moment where the student can demonstrate the learner profile developed from Early Childhood Education up to completing the IB program.
This year, more than any other, the skills present during the development of the projects had to be extensively worked with students: collaborative work, research, systematization of data collection, and to put all this in the writing of projects.
The project began with the Passion Journey, in which mentors motivated students to get in touch with their interests, concerns, and passions. Grouped according to the chosen themes, they presented their research projects to parents during an online meeting and, from there, dedicated themselves to creating a Unit of Inquiry.
The group that investigated “Sports for People with Disabilities” studied why athletes with disabilities have less access to practice sports than others and the Paralympic Games’ popularity. “Housing for Poor People” addressed how architecture can contribute to social projects and how we can support less fortunate people to have a good place to live. Students who became interested in “Cyberbullying” researched its impact on society, aiming to help children of all ages deal with their feelings when cyberbullied and to raise awareness of the responsibility for what people post. “Sustainable Agriculture” was based on the impact of agriculture on nature and health and what people can do about it. To close the topics from Y5A, students who researched “The Importance of Snakes” addressed what to do if you see a snake and the role of its poison in modern medicine.
“Hackers” was the subject of interest for students who would like to understand how they can affect other individuals’ private lives and how we can protect ourselves. On the other hand, the theme “Food for Everybody” brought information about how the difficulty in accessing food can occur due to our world’s inequality. In “Solar Eruptions and Radiation”, the group researched their effects on Earth and humans and how we can prevent them. The students interested in the topic “Abandoned Animals and Therapy” sought to understand the reason for abandonments and how animal therapy can be a useful tool. In the “Endangered and Extinct Animals” presentation, the study was based on humans’ impact on animals and why animals are still under threat of extinction.
Considering the art universe, Y5C chose more cultural themes. In “Animation”, the focus was to show the positive impact of animation on our lives. The group that researched “Cinema” showed how it is possible to help other people have more access to cinemas and theaters. “Music Connecting People” questioned how music could connect countries and cultures. Students who studied the “Arts” theme discussed how some people have fewer opportunities to develop their talents and access art. The last group decided to approach the “Abandoned Animals” theme, explaining that abandonment happens because some people do not treat animals as living beings.
“Saving Animals” addressed how animal testing works and how they are getting hurt and sick because of the products tested on them by factories. In “Sea Animals,” students talked about how human actions can affect marine animals’ lives. The “Video Game in our Lives” group showed how playing video games could physically and emotionally change people. “Technology and Medicine” approached the fact that not everyone has access to good quality healthcare technology and what we can do to help hospitals that need this technology. Finally, students who researched “Music Therapy” showed how this treatment could help several diseases, how music influences people, and how music therapy works.
The students presented all the themes during the online Exhibition for the entire School Community. It was like a rite of passage towards Middle School.
