“Building Pathways to Higher Education” is topic of lecture for families

By Lais Carvalho

At this month’s Café & Educação, the Diploma Programme (DP) Coordinator Karine Vairo, along with University Counselor, Lucas Sousa, spoke to the parents of Middle School and High School students about their preparation path toward Higher Education.

Topics such as the marks of the Diploma Programme, high school, and the consequent preparation for the vestibular were addressed during the meeting. The speakers also talked about the importance of CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service), which is the core of IB and plays crucial importance not only for colleges abroad but also for Brazilian ones.

Afterward, they presented the SEL (Social Emotional Learning) classes, called Projeto de Vida no Ensino Médio (Life Project in High School), which consist in supporting the teenager and their process of self-knowledge, as well as their relationship with teachers and family in this very important stage of their lives.

Lucas brought up the value of good preparation of the student, not only academically, but also in attributes – a mark of the Diploma Programme. The counselor talked about the application process for Brazilian and foreign universities, the most commonly required exams, and how Beacon prepares students. He emphasized that early planning concerning the application, financial planning, and possibilities for scholarships are part of the process that the student has to go through.

Lucas Sousa provides assistance to students and their families, monitors and guides the entire application process, whether it is for universities in Brazil or abroad. Beacon participates in this process in two different events. The first is U-DAY (University Day), in which representatives from national and international colleges meet with families and students to discuss the admission process, costs, and programs. The other is Career Day, in which professionals from the market are invited to talk to students about their choice of career and future, always emphasizing that a career does not define us, but opens doors to diverse perspectives.
