The second edition of BMUN was a success. Last weekend, Beacon hosted students from various schools to promote a Model United Nations. Over several sessions spanning three days, students engaged in heated discussions on important public debate topics while always maintaining a diplomatic posture and active listening. The essence of a MUN is to provide students with the opportunity to take on the role of delegates from different UN member countries. Each student represents a specific country and is assigned to a committee, such as the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, among others. During the simulation, delegates must debate and seek solutions to international issues of relevance, such as human rights, climate change, global security, international trade, and sustainable development.
In the case of Beacon, the event was organized by a secretariat of Y12 students, Pedro M., Luiza C., and Mariana P., and led by the individuals and societies teacher and high school tutor, João Andrade. The students dedicated themselves tirelessly to build a comprehensive project that encompassed middle and high school students, showcasing remarkable organizational skills. Their ability to manage complex logistics and promote a dynamic atmosphere of collaboration deserves genuine praise. The leadership of the students is the foundation of this conference, and their hard work deserves recognition from the entire community.
Beyond being a center for debate, UN simulation models are meeting spaces where students from different schools can learn together on a common topic of interest. Students can encounter young people from diverse schools, groups, and social contexts, fostering a powerful exchange among those who share an interest in public debate and diplomatic conflict resolution. We are very proud of our students’ performance in the conception, organization, and execution of this event.
