Beacon educators presented the talk “The Moodle environment as a registration space and research support for students in the 5th grade of the Elementary School”, at the MoodleMoot Brazil 2018 Conference.
Eliza Braga and Zilda Kessel shared their experience with Y5 students (11-year-olds) who use the virtual learning environment for research and text production purposes.
The research project takes place throughout the semester. During the process, the students map their interests and choose subjects of study. Educators from the school apply to be mentors, according to interest and acquaintance with the subject. Thereafter, an extensive process begins with research in several sources, interviews with specialists and visit to institutions.
The highlight of the project is the production of a written text, the presentation of the results for the entire Beacon Community and the performance of an intervention project in the community, aiming at applying the research made to the reality observed. Themes related to education, environment and health are selected.
In order to ensure the follow-up of the research process, text production and group guidance, the school chose Moodle as a working and collaborative environment. The interaction is made through the forums and links of interest (shared and commented). The daily records of the research are socialized among students, their teachers and their mentors.
