Parlamento Jovem is a project of the Câmara Municipal de São Paulo that selects bill proposals developed by middle school students. At Beacon School, it is carried out throughout Year 9 (Y9) as a capstone project integrating Geography, History, and Portuguese, with a focus on fostering active and engaged citizenship.
Throughout the year, students research topics related to the city of São Paulo, develop legislative proposals, and learn about how the legislative process works. The project includes experiences such as a field study trip to Brasília and an educational outing using trains and metro lines, bringing learning closer to the city’s urban and social realities.
This year, student Maria Manuella A. had her project selected by the Beacon community and represented the school in Parlamento Jovem Paulistano 2025. The project, entitled “Cartão Cultura Escola,” proposes the creation of a municipal card that guarantees low-income students access to cultural and leisure activities. The initiative was submitted to the Câmara Municipal de São Paulo, where the student represented Beacon alongside proposals from other public and private institutions.
In addition to academic development, with an emphasis on research and argumentative writing, students also strengthen their public speaking skills, preparing and delivering speeches to a broad audience. Throughout the process, they are encouraged to connect individual and collective perspectives, build autonomy, and work collaboratively, deepening their understanding of the city and their role as citizens.
