The 4th-grade students interviewed German immigrant Eva von Shaaffhausen as part of the unit of inquiry “Migration”.
Attentive to her responses, the students addressed topics such as the reasons why she moved from Germany to Brazil, how many times she has migrated in her life, the cultural challenges and adaptation to a new country, and whether she plans to migrate again in the future.
The students were also careful in selecting questions that were not too personal, but they also wanted to know details such as her favorite soccer team, favorite foods in each country, and the World Cup. The objective of the interview was to absorb as much information about Eva as possible so that they could be inspired and write a biography of the interviewee in their Portuguese language classes.
The experience provided the 4th-grade students with a rich learning opportunity about the topic of migration, in addition to collecting relevant information, which led them to reflect on the cultural and adaptation challenges faced by those who decide to move to a new country. The students’ interest and attention during the interview demonstrate the importance of exploring complex topics like this in the classroom, fostering a desire for history and understanding of the different cultures that make up the world we live in.
