The students of the 5th grade (Y5) went on a Field Trip to “São Paulo do Café” with the purpose of complementing the Unit of Inquiry “Making Memories” and connecting the concepts studied in the knowledge areas of Social Studies, Portuguese, and English. Besides expanding and understanding the traditions of the state, they enriched the experience by visiting several historical sites.
The trip was divided into three days and in different places. The first stop was in Cordeirópolis, at the Ibicaba farm. On the second day, they visited Brotas, where they had the opportunity to explore individual and collective memories and their various meanings. The last stop was in Jundiaí, at Fazenda Nossa Senhora da Conceição.
The students observed in class the concept of memory and its unfolding in the writing of history, focusing on the History of São Paulo. Through the analysis of documents, records, and reports, the students develop previous knowledge, improving it through the visitation put into practice along the trip. During the study, they got to know the records left by the founders of the history of one of the richest states in Brazil.
The Field Trip was fundamental for them to be able to observe the construction process of narratives, to get a close look at a historical environment, and to see how important the records left by people over time are.
