Y3’s Unit of Inquiry inspires students and their parents

The Unit of Inquiry, “We Can Change the World,” which started during the third grade (Y3) face-to-face classes, awakened the students to the idea of being an inspiration for others around the world.

In the classroom, the teachers proposed a reflection on what it means to be a hero. The students had an in-depth discussion on the subject and managed to make connections with members of the school community who had helped the reconstruction of Beacon Campus after the February flood this year. Some of the employees,  police officers, firefighters, and NGOs were mentioned.

Continuing the investigation, they searched for citizens who made a difference or who tried to change the world. The students decided which investigation lines they would follow, choosing someone who caught everyone’s attention. They studied the story of these heroes or heroines, their characteristics, and how they had impacted or inspired other lives.

For students to celebrate the end of this Unit of Inquiry, they were invited to make a video focusing on their heros’ stories, addressing the information learned throughout the process.  In Beacon’s Distance Learning Plan, teachers allowed students to choose the tools to create the video. They were encouraged to use their creativity and rely on facts for their final presentation. According to one of the mothers, “It turned out to be much more than an online learning video. It is a lifelong memory, a project of a mother and daughter during social isolation. We learned about inspiring people, how to use new tools, and, most importantly, we had a lot of fun!”
