Students study the historical heritage at Paraty

The 6th graders (Y6) went on a Field Trip to Paraty-RJ to investigate topics such as cultural historical heritage, colonial Brazil, local communities, biodiversity, environmental preservation, and sustainability. The students participated in three days of experiences, observations, and discoveries about the characteristics that make this region unique and special.

The fieldwork started with a visit to the “Forte” and Historical Center. Then, the students took part in a scavenger hunt, aiming at broadening the knowledge about the characteristics of the colonial city and the Historical Heritage.

On the second day of the trip, the students went to “Saco do Mamanguá” in lifeboats. They paddled through the mangrove forest and observed the local ecosystems. They also talked with artisans and fishermen and then returned through a trail in the Atlantic Forest. Some themes were approached, such as  sustainable development concept, preservation conditions of marine environments, “caxetal” ecosystems, exotic species, “caiçara” culture, and anthropic actions in the forest. The students also had the opportunity to experience hands-on activities with local fishermen and study marine community organisms – plankton, benthic, and necton.

As a closure of the Field Trip, they went to Ubatuba to visit the Boa Vista Village, and its prayer house and community spaces. The students learned about the Guarani handicraft, body painting, archery, and participated in a conversation with the leaders. They finished the program with a traditional Guarani lunch.

The trip was very enriching! The 6th grade broadened interdisciplinary knowledge and strengthened the bonds of friendship.
