Beacon Faculty at the 10th ICLOC Congress

Beacon School faculty team spoke at the 10th ICLOC Congress (“Instituto Cultural Lourenço Catanho”) – Classroom Practices. One of the themes was: “Make-believe: The game and the human development”. The teachers Carolina Andrade, Luiza Torres, Marília Martins and Tânia Terpins spoke about the learning through game in a bilingual context of an institution that adopts the Primary Years Program (PYP) and is recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization as an IB World School.

The Make-Believe is a space created by teachers and assistants, which invites children to take ownership of the materials and activities as from the involvement in proposed situations. The goal is to connect learning areas and content for development within the classrooms.

The facilities change every two weeks and are set in a specific space within the school premises. The environments reproduce daily situations and allow children to explore through free play, enriching the bilingual vocabulary, developing the social and emotional competences, besides abilities in the maths, language, science and fine motor skills areas.

Another part of Beacon staff presented the theme “Database of pedagogical production as a tool for reflection and assessment of teaching work”. With regard to the school context, the educator Lais Carvalho talked about the implementation process of the database that gathered, organized and made possible for the school’s pedagogical team to access the students’ and teachers’ productions, allowing the reflection regarding the pedagogical files preserved since the school’s opening.

Recently opened to the school community, the database has 30,000 documents approximately. The implementation process was matured as from workshops with teachers and coordinators. The database was built based on the participation of faculty and documentation specialists. Considering the current scenario where schools barely preserve their own pedagogical documents, the collaborative construction of the school’s memory with the involvement of its leading actors is proposed.

The Beacon Knowledge program for electronic documents management became a source for teachers’ work, enabling the easy access to the production of previous years.
