Our students are growing and, more than ever, open dialogue is necessary. The second TeenAge Talk meeting addressed the theme “Sexual Manifestations among Teenagers”, and welcomed psychologist Beatriz Bork, who holds a master’s degree in School Psychology and Human Development from USP. She is a specialist focused on caring for adolescents and adults with 25 years of experience.
Beatriz spoke to parents and guardians from the 5th to 8th grades (Y5 to Y8) and then to students from the 7th and 8th grades (Y7 and Y8). She addressed mainly physical changes – both hormonal and neurological – which occur in the transition from childhood to adult life.
The psychologist opened the discussion by addressing the historical context of sex. She talked about the concepts that are transmitted culturally and their repercussion nowadays. The expected behaviors from male and female genders have been passed through generations and directly affect the way of judging and acting towards others.
In an open and informal talk, parents and students clarified concerns about themes related to sexuality, such as pleasure, STDs, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Beatriz highlights that understanding that sexuality is something natural is one of the possible ways of dealing with the subject.
