Y8 Builds Spaceship Prototypes in Design Class

The first Design project of the year invited Year 8 students to investigate the existence of extraterrestrial life through the lens of the Fermi Paradox, which highlights the contradiction between the high probability of life beyond Earth and the lack of evidence supporting it. This provocation served as a starting point for building a prototype of a spaceship capable of withstanding harsh and unpredictable conditions, while also meeting the long-term needs of a human crew over generations. The unit integrates science, technology, and creativity, following the MYP (Middle Years Programme) Design Cycle to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and group collaboration. Throughout the process, students explore, sketch, build, and test sustainable prototypes, engaging with themes such as innovation, systems, and cooperation, while documenting their journey up to the final presentation.
