The students from the 6th grade went on a field trip to Paraty, in Rio de Janeiro. The purpose of the trip was to approach subjects worked on in the classroom, in several subjects, for practical application. The destination in Rio de Janeiro encompassed everything they were looking for in their learning process.
In the classroom, the students learned about ecosystems and biomes, as well as the living and non-living things that make up the world. In Paraty, they put into practice the knowledge acquired in the books, observing various biomes such as mangroves, the Atlantic Forest, and coastal environments such as beaches and rocky coasts, noting the specific characteristics of each one.
The children observed the inhabitants’ housing, understanding the cultural aspects of the people who live there, as well as how they occupy the ecosystem and the role they play in local preservation.
The students visited traditional communities in the region, such as the Pataxó Indian villages and the quilombola communities, where they sharpened their creativity and followed the routine of these ancient peoples nowadays.
They also visited the historic center of Paraty to understand the main buildings in the area and the history of the city. Then, they developed a map of the historic center with their observations of the space. Another activity was the choice of a concept, previously established by the teachers, among technology, community and ecosystem, culture, change, and preservation and sustainability, thus relating the chosen theme to the communities visited in Paraty in a graphical form, in animation, or through a quiz.
This study was enriching for the students’ learning and development, allowing them to share experiences in a remarkable way with their educators and friends. The trip provided special, memorable moments during the school year.
