The students of the 2nd year of High School (Y11) have produced, for CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service), educational videos addressing recycling in three types of waste: organic matter, recyclables, and rejects. CAS is a program that is part of the IB’s DP (Diploma Programme) in which the student chooses projects and initiatives to engage with in relation to the three elements – Creativity, Activity, and Service. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Action seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service to the community provides a means for new learning with academic value.
To include all students in sustainability actions, the group should initially make twelve boxes for waste disposal at the Beacon. The goal is that, by the end of the year, four will be finished for use at Campus. The students then came up with the idea of making short videos to raise awareness, which would help the community in the recycling process.
They received theoretical classes about the different types of waste and the role of people to reuse them. Based on a supervised script, the students combined their creativity and their concern for the environment and finalized the video, which will be shared with the other classmates, teachers, and even collaborators.
