Unit of Inquiry – Schools

By Bruna Cronfli

Grade 1 students (Y1) are studying the Unit of Inquiry “Schools” and exploring the concepts of system and interdependence.

“We get to school every day, and our classroom is always so clean. How does that happen? Who prepares our lunch? “Who prints the activities we do? “. These, among other questions, were raised by students during discussions in the classroom and conversation circles to construct hypotheses.

So many people are involved in the school services, and so many processes happen simultaneously! In order to give visibility to each of Beacon’s areas and show in a concrete and meaningful way how this team operates, students are participating in this investigative project. In an initial proposal, they observed the school space and identified the people present in each area. After this analysis, they went through interviews, better understanding the action and routine of the school’s employees.

After these initial meetings, the children were able to spend a morning accompanying each employee in their tasks. Among them, they learned how to use the thermometer with the school porter, register the loan of a book with the librarian, use a mop broom with the cleaning lady, and laminate images in the printer.

Y1 groups are excited about the experience and learning a lot from the exchange with the employees!
