As an essential part of the school’s curriculum, sports play an important role in the physical and emotional development of students. The Sports Week was born to promote and celebrate the practice of physical activities, and focuses on strengthening values such as dialogue, group interaction and mutual respect.
The Physical Education staff practices with students and considers each age bracket motor skills to select the various teams. Each grade-level group is mixed in order to generate a balance and to provide the integration among participants.
The choice of games also respects the motor limitations of each athlete’s age range. The activities have simple easy-to-grasp rules, and are related to the Unit of Inquiry in some cases. Each team has a coach, who plays an essential role in the learning process. Before and after each game, the coach talks with his/her team and informs the must-have attitudes inside and outside the court. The coach also teaches students to act with ethics and respect, and to demonstrate fair play.
Another fundamental concept embraced by teachers and coaches inside the classroom and in the court is persistence and overcoming challenges. The students watched videos and participated in conversations about the importance of practicing and being resilient. They made flags, created war cries, cheered for other teams and, above all, worked collaboratively.
The week came to a close with the presence of family members as supporters, in an exciting and interactive encounter. The giving out of medals was not related to results, but rather to the students’ participation in the event.
