Professional Training Week marks the beginning of the 2023 school year

By Lais Carvalho

The beginning of the 2023 school year was marked by several training programs for the pedagogical team. In addition to the usual preparation of classrooms and activities, separation of new materials and organization of spaces, teachers from all segments participated in meetings for collaborative planning and preparation of the Open House meetings.

The educators from G1 to G5 were introduced to the new Biliteracy policy that provides the basis for the work that is done with children from G6 (6 years old) onwards. They were able to critically read the document and bring proposals for how literacy activities permeate the curriculum. They also participated in the opening training: “Amplifying the PYP through writer’s workshop” with an international consultant, and also had a specific workshop on “The beginning of literacy and identity in the early years”.

Teachers from G6 to Y5 (6 years to 5th grade) plunged into an intense training all week long with Justine Otte, an international facilitator specializing in literacy. The theme for the year was “Amplifying the PYP through writer’s workshop”. The team had specific workshops by grade and, together with the area leaders of Portuguese and English, as well as with the pedagogical coordinators and the PYP coordinator, were able to establish the goals for the year.

The Middle School teachers, on the other hand, engaged in internal training sessions with the MYP coordinator, Felipe Pregnolatto, to align the expectations of the grades and of the program. They also participated in meetings with the area leaders, who promoted reflection about the “curricular continuum” of the respective segment and of the High School.

Finally, the High School teachers had an official Diploma Programme training related to “Extended Essay”. In addition, they were able to discuss their expectations for the exams, the focus of their classes, and the curriculum alignment for the year.

These were days of intense preparation for another school year committed to providing an education of excellence to our students.
