The Literary Day is an event that celebrates the literature as a language that entertains, excites and informs us. A day to get in touch with people who write and tell stories, recite poems and discuss parameters of a narrative. Students and teachers had the opportunity to exhibit the productions related to texts of different literary genres developed in the classroom, besides participating in the Book Fair.
Some authors of shared reading books have been invited to participate in a conversation with students, either to tell stories or to clarify doubts about their biographies, publishers and other aspects regarding their profession as writers. Beacon parents and teachers also volunteered for storytelling in different classes, from Early Childhood Education to Middle School (G2 to Y8).
Ricardo Azevedo, author of the book “Contos de Bichos do Mato”, was welcomed by 2nd graders (Y2) to talk about the writing process and illustration of his books. J. Carlos Torero, author of the book “Nuno Descobre o Brasil”, read passages of his stories, especially extracts from a book about castles that has not yet been published, co-authored with his son.
During Literary Day we had the 5th Book Fair, an opportunity for students, parents and staff members to renew and expand their library, exchanging books they no longer read for others of greater interest. Organized by the volunteer mothers of BCIA Cultural Actions, the fair encouraged the reading habit, valued the personal initiative of choice, and reinforced the act of donation and the awareness regarding sustainability.
The rules of the fair and the procedure of collecting, exchanging, and selling books was conceived together with Sonia Grandi, Beacon’s Library Coordinator, seeking to raise students’ awareness about the importance of reading.
A group of volunteer parents got organized to receive the book donations and sort them out, separating books by age group. After the visit, remaining books were sent to the “BCIA Fixed Bookcase” – in a “pick up and return” system – and part of them were donated to charity institutions.
The Book Fair was a success: 1.038 books were exchanged and more than 400 books were sold!
