In the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme (MYP), we believe that education should go beyond the memorization of facts. Our focus is on teaching students how to learn, developing young people who are inquisitive, knowledgeable, and, above all, prepared for the challenges of a constantly changing 21st century.
Unlike traditional models, the MYP is structured around conceptual learning. Rather than studying isolated topics, our students explore big ideas — such as “Sustainability,” “Change,” or “Systems.” This approach makes knowledge transferable; what is learned in Science can be applied in Humanities, creating a network of deep understanding that extends far beyond exams.
For learning to be meaningful, it must be relevant. Through the Global Contexts, we connect academic content to real-life situations. Whether exploring “Identities and Relationships” or “Scientific and Technical Innovation,” students are encouraged to look outward and understand how their studies impact local and global communities.

Another key differentiator of IB programmes lies in the development of Approaches to Learning (ATLs). We do not teach only the “what,” but also the “how.” We explicitly focus on five essential skill categories:
The world is not divided into boxes — and education does not need to be either. Interdisciplinarity is central to our programme. Our teachers regularly collaborate to design units in which different subjects come together to address a shared problem. This teaches students to synthesize perspectives and value a holistic view of knowledge.
At Beacon, we elevate the international curriculum by integrating it harmoniously with the competencies of the BNCC (Brazil’s National Common Core Curriculum), ensuring a rigorous education connected to our Brazilian identity. Our academic excellence is reflected in strong participation in academic Olympiads, which challenge our students to push beyond their limits.
We value active citizenship through initiatives such as the Parlamento Jovem Paulistano (São Paulo Youth Parliament) and expand learning beyond the classroom through our Study Trips across Brazil, exploring the country’s cultural and environmental diversity. All of this converges in our pillar of Community Engagement, where learning becomes action and service. Beacon students embrace their role as agents of social transformation, combining global rigor with passion and responsibility for their own country.
The Parlamento Jovem Paulistano, an initiative of the Câmara Municipal de São Paulo, provides students with hands-on experience in democratic processes through the drafting, defense, and voting of Bills. The project encourages civic engagement and a deeper understanding of how the legislative branch operates, grounded in real challenges faced by the city.
Embedded in the Global Context “Orientation in Time and Space,” students integrate knowledge from Geography, History, and Portuguese Language to investigate socio-spatial issues observed during a field study in the city. Based on research and data collection, they develop viable legislative proposals aligned with current laws.
This experience directly reflects the principles of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), promoting inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, effective communication, and responsible action. At Beacon School, the project reinforces our commitment to preparing Year 9 students as conscious, engaged citizens, ready to intervene ethically and meaningfully in society.
