The International Day is an annual event that aims to provide students and parents with an experience of different cultures, mainly the nationalities represented by the families of our Beacon Community.
In addition to workshops and exhibitions, the classrooms were decorated and prepared to show the culture, habits, cuisine, and other facts of interest of each country or people.
This year, the selection of countries by group was made amongst teachers and students for G5 to Y8 (Early Childhood Education and Elementary School). For G2 to G4 children (2-to-4-year-old children), the teachers chose among the countries already selected by the other graders. The selection criteria took into consideration the interest of children according to the nationality or place they visited during their vacations, the subjects worked on in the Units of Inquiry, and the themes addressed during classes.
The students, along with their teachers, were engaged in researching about the chosen nations. They investigated, researched, and prepared exhibitions for the party.
During the weeks prior to the International Day, family members organized themselves with the help of the BCIA (Beacon Community in Action) team to decide which workshop would be relevant to each country/people. Marquetry, painting, tea production, and tasting of spices are some examples of the activities offered in each representing classroom.
In addition to the workshops, the auditorium stage was occupied by groups of traditional dances, sumo performances, pocket shows of Middle School students, and also a choir music presentation made up of parents, coordinators, the principal, and some students.
Beacon recognizes diversity as a way to promote and expand personal development and collaboration with society. The International Day is a celebration that is rich in learning, a great opportunity for the Beacon Community to expand their cultural repertoire and practice empathic social interaction.
