Specialist Katia Dantas talked about the importance of the alliance between families and schools for the full protection of children and adolescents. She presented key concepts for the identification of abuse and situations that can lead to trauma. Through practical examples, the speaker and the families discussed different ways to act in these cases.
During the event, Katia demystified some misconceptions about trauma and abuse, relating the content to Beacon’s Safeguarding Policy. In addition to the school environment, the digital world was also the subject of the conversation. Families actively participated in the discussion about how to set healthy limits on internet use, sharing their experiences and listening to the expert. The purpose of the meeting was to provide a reflective view on the complexity of institutional and child abuse.
With 20 years of experience in preventing and responding to violence against vulnerable populations, Katia comes from a background of working with organizations where she has led global and regional efforts to prevent and act on cases of missing children and adolescents. Before this meeting with the families, Katia had already given a lecture at Beacon at the beginning of the year about child protection. All employees from different sectors participated in the event.
At Beacon, regardless of the position held, everyone is considered an educator, since all employees at the school work for the benefit of the student. Therefore, the “Safeguarding Policy”, updated in 2022, was presented at the beginning of the year.
