Coffee & Education addresses entry in higher education

In this edition of Café & Educação, High School Counselor Lucas Sousa talked to family members about this very important process in the lives of teenagers: entering higher education.

He outlined three fundamental aspects:

1 – How Beacon’s Career Counseling department is structured and what it involves

In the first part, Lucas emphasized the Life Project classes, which work on significant job skills such as self-regulation, communication, resilience, collaboration, etc. He also showed programs that the school offers to help people choose a profession. These include Career Day, in which parents from the school talk about their careers, and Job Shadowing, which allows students to be inserted into a professional environment of their choice for a week under supervision.

2 – Factors involved in choosing universities

Lucas recapped significant aspects to consider, such as: the student’s academic profile, extracurricular activities, social projects, future employability and, considering colleges abroad, the climate, distance, and student autonomy. Visits to colleges in Brazil that open their doors to students, as well as contact with universities abroad through participation in the U-Day event offered by the school, are fundamental in this process. Summer programs, where students experience the potential college of their choice by taking courses of their interest, are increasingly widespread and have a growing range of possibilities.

3 – Admissions process in Brazil and abroad

DP results, GPA, SAT and other acronyms were explained by Lucas, as well as the importance of each one in the different admissions processes.

He also provided data from Beacon, Brazil, and around the world so that parents/ guardians could understand the importance of focusing on the student’s school process and the need to make strategic choices together. The costs of universities, as well as the possibilities of scholarships, were also important points brought up during the talk.

It is in the school-family partnership and in taking care of relationships with teenagers that we will be able to support and guide our children in their future.
