Beacon supports initiative to raise book donations to communities in need

By Bruna Cronfli

The prolonged absence from school affected mainly children in the public school system, deprived of contact with books and difficulty accessing the internet.

For children, learning to read is a critical moment to the beginning of new discoveries and possibilities. Contact with books and interaction with stories helps with psychomotor, cognitive, and intellectual development. Reading also contributes to improvements in vocabulary, speech, and school performance,  stimulating creativity, assisting the acquisition of culture, improving writing, and encouraging imagination.

Thinking about this and being committed to social responsibility, Beacon is supporting the Leve História movement, a voluntary, nonpartisan, and non-profit initiative that aims to raise awareness among school communities in the private network for the worsening of social inequality.

“Due to this scenario, we are asking for families with rich access to literature to donate books to low-income children and young people. We believe free circulation and distribution of books help to rescue the interest and curiosity of students away from school during the pandemic and can make a difference in combating school evasion. Thus, we transform literature into a present, desire and affection”, according to the movement.

The books, used and in good conditions, will be donated to students from communities in need. Partner institutions, public schools, NGOs, and community libraries act as intermediaries for the stories to reach the children.

When in contact with books, moments of reading and enchantment emerge; in addition to promoting reading and literacy, the movement unites school communities (public and private) around a solidarity project and promotes necessary and urgent reflections and attitudes foreseen in the BNCC (Base Nacional Comum Curricular).

Understanding the importance of books and reading in early childhood education is necessary for educators and educational institutions. Those responsible should also be aware of the benefits of reading practice. In addition to supporting the cause and helping with the campaign, students wrote dedications in the books as a gesture of affection and solidarity. Together, students, families, and the school can make a difference in the education of many children in an essential exercise of citizenship, empathy, and cooperation.
