Since the pandemic started worldwide, people who were already living in a situation of social vulnerability had their reality become terribly worse. The restrictions imposed affected the economy and many parents have nowhere to support themselves and their children. Research shows that the number of people living in structural hunger has increased fivefold since the virus arrived in Brazil, reaching more than 520,000. And 20 million more people were pushed in 2021 to extreme levels of food insecurity.
Focused on the mission of connecting people at risk and vulnerable through the democratization of gastronomy to promote social mobility, the Instituto Capim Santo organized a social action, in partnership with Beacon’s volunteer families.
Capim Santo Escola, the Campus food supplier, was also part of the action. The main project aimed to produce and distribute 530 lunchboxes for Associação Vila Leopoldina, a local community.
The families of the BCIA (Beacon Community in Action – a group of partner parents who work on behalf of the school community) helped in handling and labeling the food. In addition, they were responsible for subsidizing the cost of food and the fees of employees who participated in the process. At the same time, Capim Santo prepared the menu and prepared the lunchboxes at school.
In a collaborative action, we were able to multiply hope with 28 kg of beans, 55 kg of rice, 105 kg of chicken and 20 kg of potatoes and carrots for the production of lunchboxes. The result was a delicious stewed chicken and, of course, the basic ingredients to complete the Brazilian’s meal: the famous rice and beans. To add a touch of affection, chocolate cookies were given as dessert.
