In an online event for students, parents, and guests, Beacon launched the Career and University Guidance area, whose objective is to guide students and parents on issues related to careers and universities in Brazil and abroad.
According to director Maria Eduarda Sawaya, throughout the students’ academic career, the school’s objective is to train them to make the best selections, whether in Brazilian or international universities. For this, Beacon created the Career and University Guidance in partnership with the group Daqui pra Fora, an educational consultancy that, since 2001, has been preparing students for university selection processes. There will be events, simulated international tests, shifts of doubts, and several other initiatives.
“It is prevalent for students to choose their universities for‘ thinking ’and for what they hear, without much grounding. The Career and Guidance journey is to enable greater self-knowledge so that these students make more decisive choices, looking inward, for what makes sense for each one ”, explains Felipe Fonseca, CEO of Daqui pra Fora.
The preparation for international universities’ selection processes was one of the main topics covered at the meeting. More than academic excellence, Felipe’s points emphasize the student’s personal development, such as leaving the comfort zone, maturity, adaptation, and flexibility.
The selection process varies from institution to institution, considering academic criteria (school transcripts and local assessments, such as the ACT, TOEFL, ENEM), in addition to extracurricular activities, writing, letters of recommendation, interviews, or portfolio. Felipe also warns that the international model does not restrict these criteria. “Some Brazilian universities are already asking for a letter of motivation, oral exams, a personality map, among others.”
For students entering high school next year, Felipe ended with tips: “In the academic field, put the grade bar on top and develop intellectual curiosity; in financial planning, prepare for the opportunities that will arise in the short, medium and long term; on staff, start getting involved with different activities, undergo new experiences and, of course, if possible, visiting universities in Brazil and abroad.”
