The exercise of citizenship and solidarity are values strongly present in our pedagogical actions. With this in mind, the Middle School Coordinator, Américo dos Santos, in partnership with Geruza Hasler, coordinator of the “Projeto Jatobá” at Beacon, developed the Social Project – Tutor Students.
The idea is that 8th graders (Y8) participate in a voluntary project. In order to collaborate with the learning process of students from public schools, they will offer support during this moment when remote learning has become a major challenge.
As a kick-off, Beacon students discussed the purpose of the project, the reality of how online classes are taking place for students from public schools and all the difficulties they eventually faced and still do nowadays. From this point, five students volunteered to take on the role of tutors in Math, History, Geography, Portuguese and English, according to their preference.
The next step consisted of meetings with tutor students so that they could be prepared. They learned how to plan and discussed ways of carrying out and conducting the activities. Furthermore, they received a datasheet with the contents that need to be addressed in the 5th grade, age group selected for the project.
Another subject addressed was the concern regarding socioemotional skills that tutors would have to develop with students who participate in the project. During the meetings, topics such as solidarity, resilience, care and attention were highlighted. The project started this month in a remote format and will take place weekly, with 30-minute classes per subject. Beacon will also offer its faculty support and supervision throughout the process.
“This initiative reveals a significant and exciting engagement of our students with the social causes that go beyond the school walls”, comments coordinator Américo.
