6th Literary Week Celebrated the Seven Classical Arts Through Encounters, Workshops, and Immersive Experiences

Between May 25 and 29, Beacon School held the 6th edition of its Literary Week, an event that brought together the entire school community around reading, creativity, and the power of storytelling. As a biennial initiative, Literary Week reinforces the school’s commitment to developing critical, curious, and empathetic readers by creating meaningful and inspiring literary experiences.

This year’s theme explored literature as an artistic expression and its dialogue with the other classical arts — architecture, sculpture, painting, music, dance, and cinema. Students were invited to discover how stories transcend different languages and cultural manifestations, revealing connections between words, images, sounds, movement, and aesthetic experiences.

Throughout the week, students from G1 to Y11 participated in a diverse program designed to engage different age groups and interests. The school welcomed authors, illustrators, storytellers, journalists, filmmakers, artists, and educators, who shared their professional journeys and creative processes, offering enriching encounters with literature and its many forms of expression.

In Early Childhood Education, students experienced moments of wonder through musical storytelling, interactive performances, and meetings with authors and storytellers. Guests such as storytelling duo As Quase Gêmeas and authors Janaina Tokitaka, Nina Brondi, and Otávio Júnior inspired imagination, listening skills, and a love of reading through music, oral storytelling, and literary experiences.

In the Primary Years, students broadened their cultural horizons through activities that connected literature, journalism, and languages. Workshops led by Jornal Joca encouraged reflection on information literacy and citizenship, while a Spanish storytelling session with Juan Ocampo provided an immersion into Latin American culture, demonstrating how literature can serve as a bridge between different peoples and traditions.

In the Middle and High School years, the program promoted discussions about contemporary storytelling in its many forms. Authors, illustrators, screenwriters, audiovisual producers, filmmakers, and content creators shared their professional experiences, showing students how stories come to life in books, films, television series, digital platforms, and other media. Encounters with guests such as Stela Barbieri, Fernando Vilela, Beto Gauss, Camila Tarifa, Fábio Kabral, and Anajú Livros expanded students’ cultural repertoire and strengthened the dialogue between literature, art, and society.

Literary Week also highlighted professional development for educators. Teachers participated in special sessions with Patricia Auerbach and André Gravatá, leading figures in reading, literature, and education in Brazil, fostering reflections on reader development and the role of art in teaching and learning processes.

In addition to guest presentations, the program featured workshops, interactive activities, and immersive experiences developed in collaboration with different school teams. Students took part in literary challenges, collaborative projects, and hands-on experiences that transformed reading into an active and meaningful practice. One of the highlights was a theatrical performance prepared by the Drama students for High School audiences, showcasing the connection between literature and the performing arts while reinforcing student agency and participation in the event.

The celebration of reading extended beyond classroom activities. Throughout the week, the school community had the opportunity to visit the traditional Martins Fontes Book Fair, which offered a wide selection of national and international titles for all ages and interests. The program also included a book fair organized by the Beacon Community Association (BCA), further strengthening family engagement and expanding access to books.

The event concluded with the traditional Book Character Parade, one of the most anticipated moments for students. Dressed as characters who had marked their reading journeys, students celebrated literature in a creative and collective way, sharing the enthusiasm cultivated throughout the week.

By bringing together literature, theatre, music, visual arts, cinema, and other artistic expressions, the 6th Literary Week reaffirmed the role of reading as a tool for discovery, creativity, and transformation. More than an event, the week provided an opportunity for the entire Beacon community to celebrate the stories that connect us, broaden our horizons, and help us better understand the world and one another.
