Carolina Videira from the Jiló Class had a conversation with students from Y4 to Y11 during TeenAge Talk on the topic “Diversity and Prejudice: There’s No Halfway Inclusion.” Before that, there was a Conference Cycle on the same subject with Beacon families.
Aiming to discuss the relationships between neuroscience, prejudice, violence, and humanization, participants were introduced to the foundations that influence human behavior, allowing for a critical analysis of the reasons behind our actions. These include empathy, instinctive prejudices, and individual values. Through the approach of behavioral neuroscience and managing differences, Carolina Videira discussed strategies to make our unconscious biases conscious, assisting students and families in resolving conflicts within and outside of Beacon.
In addition to the discussion on inclusion and our prejudices, another topic debated was abuse – psychological and physical. Once conflict arises, everyone has responsibilities in resolving it, both the aggressor and the victim, and even those who witnessed it. An exercise of thinking about immediate action was the challenge posed to students and families to conclude the lecture.
