In the Inquiry Unit “Cities”, third graders (Y3) had the opportunity to research and explore the theme of urban art during the Art classes. The trigger to introduce the first conversations was the study of the different concepts existing in graffiti as an art and their respective values for society. Why some of them are valued and others are not? Why some are considered beautiful and others ugly?
After this reflection, the teachers planned a sequence of activities with the objective that students understand the use of patterns in the arts. The indigenous standards were used as the main reference for the study.
The students then learned to use the stencil and the paint roller. They visited the walls of the school’s parking lot to assess the possibilities of applying the learned techniques. They realized that if everyone created their arts freely, they wouldn’t make use of the space in the best way. From this investigation, the students themselves defined that each one would be responsible for creating their art on a specif brick surface.
The result caught everyone’s attention when circulating in the space! The students had the opportunity to share their learning throughout the project. In addition to the urban art concepts studied, third graders were proud to have their productions immortalized on the school walls. They learned to paint on a surface with a texture that was completely different from that of paper, and they also discovered that the process was not as easy as they thought it would be. It was necessary several layers of paint and a lot of dedication and care to get the desired result.
