Beacon specialists highlighted in Direcional Escolas Magazine

Direcional Escolas magazine published a special feature on the inclusion of neurodivergent children in everyday school life, bringing together experts to discuss strategies that promote participation, belonging, and learning while respecting students’ individual differences. The article emphasizes that inclusion goes beyond access to mainstream education, requiring a review of methodologies, teacher training, dialogue with families, and the development of a welcoming school culture.

Representing Beacon School, Maria Laura Sanchez Toca, Learning Support and Inclusion Coordinator at the Student Well-Being Center, reinforces that inclusion should be understood as both a pedagogical and institutional commitment. She explains that, at Beacon School, this work is structured around three dimensions: clear policies, consistent pedagogical practices, and a truly inclusive school culture. In daily practice, this translates into explicit learning objectives, differentiation strategies, structured routines, and individualized support, in addition to SWBC follow-up and ongoing dialogue with families and specialists.

Tania Terpins, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Coordinator at the SWBC, emphasizes that social-emotional learning is essential for effective inclusion. According to her, intentional practices that develop empathy, self-regulation, and responsibility help build environments in which all students feel a sense of belonging and are able to participate actively. Tania also highlights the importance of predictable routines, clear agreements, and explicit teaching of social behaviors, fostering security, engagement, and appreciation for different ways of learning.

The contributions of Tania Terpins and Maria Laura Sanchez Toca reinforce Beacon School’s commitment to an education that recognizes diversity as a strength and promotes real opportunities for participation and belonging.
