Primary Years Program (PYP)

Beacon adopts the Primary Years Program of the International Baccalaureate Organization (PYP-IB) for Early Childhood Education and years 1 to 5 of the Elementary School.

Knowledge is a process of collective construction. As students gain knowledge, it is essential that they understand the historical and social context in which they live, and become aware of the challenges they face to understand and solve issues related to our status as "human beings" together with others.

The PYP curriculum is based on five essential elements: knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action.

Significant, relevant content that we wish for students to explore and know about, taking into consideration their prior experience and understanding.


Powerful ideas that have relevance within the subject areas, but also transcend them and that students must explore and re-explore in order to develop coherent, in-depth understanding.


The abilities students need to demonstrate in order to succeed in a changing and challenging world, which may be disciplinary or transdisciplinary in nature.


Dispositions that are expressions of fundamental values, beliefs and feelings about learning, the environment and people.


Demonstrations of deeper learning in responsible behavior through responsible action; a manifestation in practice of the other essential elements.

The curriculum is structured through 6 global themes that constitute the foundation of several disciplines generating knowledge development in a constructive and meaningful way, both in Portuguese and English.
